<< INSERT BREADCRUMBS >>
Pradaxa, a blood-thinning medication similar to Xarelto, was approved in 2010 to help prevent strokes. The manufacturer of Pradaxa, Boehringer Ingelheim, invested heavily in the marketing of the drug as a safe, effective medication that was superior to warfarin (a standard anticoagulant treatment in the U.S.). Unfortunately, the performance of the drug did not meet expectations and instead severely injured many patients, even causing death in some cases. Much of Pradaxa’s appeal lies in the fact that Boehringer Ingelheim claims that it requires much less monitoring than the standard blood thinner. However, there is no antidote to Pradaxa, meaning that if a patient begins to bleed, there is no way to reverse the bleeding until the drug has left the patient’s system.
In serious cases, Pradaxa can cause the following: uncontrollable bleeding, hemorrhage, heart attack, liver failure, or death. In 2013, a black box warning was given by the FDA. This is the most serious warning that the FDA can give for a drug. Lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim are ongoing. If you or a loved one have been injured by Pradaxa, it’s important that you get legal help right away.
